Lidgates Butchers has been in operation since 1850 and our family have always sold pies in the shop. We use recipes that have been passed down over the decades, refining them here and there as tastes have changed but our core principles have always remained the same: the best quality ingredients treated with care and attention will produce excellent pies.

Becoming disappointing

I’m detecting some slight quality loss in my regular steak and kidney pies - the amount of kidney has reduced and appears to be replaced by more tiny mushrooms that look like kidney but aren’t and that taste chewy and rubbery. The steak is tougher too.

Good flavour, tough beef

I won't buy this again. The seasoning and flavour were great, but my pie was clearly made from a tough, resentful old cow! Very hard work to chew, and I really don't think my teeth are up to any further battles.

Well Filled

As always the pie is packed full with tender pieces of slow cooked beef though I didn’t detect any kidney in this pie but a lot of mini mushrooms, which made me wonder whether I’d been sent a Steak & Mushroom pie by mistake? Anyway, still an enjoyable pie making a Sunday lunch with roast butternut squash, red peppers, courgettes, homegrown runner beans and carrots; with plenty left over for a Monday night meal.
