The January Reset: What Actually Works (And What Doesn't)

Walk into any supermarket in January and you'll find an aisle dedicated to "detox": green juices, cleansing teas, reset supplements.

It's a compelling narrative. The problem? Almost none of it is based on actual science.

Your body already has a detox system

Your liver and kidneys are remarkably sophisticated detoxification organs that work 24/7.

Your built-in detox:
Liver - processes everything you consume, converting harmful substances into safe forms
Kidneys - filter about 180 litres of blood daily

Unless you have diagnosed liver or kidney disease, your body doesn't need help detoxifying.

Why detox products don't work

They can't name the toxins. Ask what specific substances a "detox tea" removes and you get vague answers: "toxins," "impurities." In medicine, a toxin is specific. In marketing, it's just a scary word.
The evidence doesn't exist. A systematic review found "no compelling evidence to support the use of detox diets for weight management or toxin elimination."
Some are harmful. Many contain laxatives or diuretics that can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

What your body actually needs post-Christmas

  • Return to regular eating - the single most effective strategy. Your body will rebalance within 1-2 weeks.
  • Adequate hydration - plain water supports kidney function. No fancy concoctions required.
  • Quality sleep - this is when your body does significant repair work. More valuable than any supplement.
  • Gentle movement - walking, stretching, swimming - not punishing gym sessions.
  • Fibre and vegetables - if there's one thing your body had less of during Christmas, it's probably fibre.

The real January reset

✓ Eat normally - balanced meals at regular times

✓ Sleep adequately - 7-9 hours

✓ Move gently - daily walking

✓ Hydrate properly

✓ Be patient - give it 2 weeks

The bottom line: No products required. No special protocols. Just returning to the sustainable habits that work year-round.
